Professionalism behind the wheel

The responsibility travels with the driver.

When someone drives for work, their choices affect people, equipment and the reputation of the organization they represent. Every journey calls for preparation, attention and good judgment.

The Professional Standard Defensive Driving Program begins with the person behind the wheel: their attitude, habits and sense of responsibility. It then connects that foundation to the five pillars of the D.R.I.V.E. Safe System.

Through an interactive classroom experience, participants consider what professional driving means in their own role—and what they can carry into their next workday.

What should your coworkers, passengers and community be able to count on when you are behind the wheel?

The Professional Driver Standard

Four commitments.
A standard for every journey.

These commitments establish the mindset participants bring to the rest of the program—and to their responsibilities on the road.

Be Ready

Professional driving starts before the vehicle moves.

Consider your readiness, the vehicle and the journey ahead. Give preparation the attention it deserves, and address concerns before they become problems on the road.

Ask yourself: Am I prepared for this vehicle, this trip and today’s conditions?

Use Sound Judgment

Make decisions that fit the situation.

Recognize changing conditions, consider the consequences of your choices and resist pressure to rush. Choose actions that protect the time and space you need to respond.

Ask yourself: What is the safest reasonable decision with the information I have?

Take Ownership

Your choices are part of the safety culture.

Accept responsibility for the decisions within your control. Communicate concerns, acknowledge mistakes and take constructive action when something needs attention.

Ask yourself: What can I do, communicate or change to help this situation?

Keep Improving

Experience becomes more valuable when you learn from it.

Reflect on your habits, stay open to feedback and recognize that familiar tasks still deserve attention. Look for practical ways to strengthen your driving over time.

Ask yourself: What can I learn from this and apply on my next journey?

From mindset to driving decisions

Defensive Mindset

Choose your response.

Bring patience, focus and a deliberate approach to the road. Recognize how frustration, pressure and overconfidence can influence the choices you make.

Risk Management

Act before the situation becomes urgent.

Identify what could go wrong, consider how the situation is developing and make choices that reduce exposure to avoidable risk.

Insight and Awareness

Notice more. Anticipate earlier.

Pay attention to the road, other road users and your own assumptions. Look beyond the immediate moment to understand what may happen next.

Vehicle Handling

Know your vehicle. Respect its limits.

Understand the vehicle you are operating and the importance of smooth, controlled inputs. Connect speed, space and vehicle response to the demands of the task.

Environmental Adaptation

Let conditions guide your decisions.

Adjust your approach as weather, visibility, road surfaces and traffic conditions change. Recognize when a familiar journey requires a different plan.

An interactive learning experience

Bring your experience into the conversation.

Drivers arrive with established habits, personal experience and real workplace pressures. The classroom gives them space to examine those influences and consider their choices with fresh attention.

01

Discuss the decisions

Connect the course concepts to the demands of driving for work, including time pressure, distractions and interactions with other road users.

02

Reflect on the habits

Consider how attitude and routine shape what happens behind the wheel. Recognize strengths and identify behaviours that deserve another look.

03

Connect it to the next journey

Consider how the Professional Driver Standard and D.R.I.V.E. Safe System can guide preparation, decisions and responses back at work.
